Gaps or Spacing between Teeth

I often come across patients frustrated with gaps or spacing between the teeth. They want to close these gaps but do not want to undergo braces or orthodontic treatment.

They feel it will be a long and painful process and the long term commitment scares them. And often they are unaware of other options.

There are various other treatment modalities which can work really well, if spacing is the only issue.

  1. Tooth colored composite restorations — This can be done in a single sitting and is completely painless and easy. With the correct shade matching and good finishing, this is a fabulous option for diastema closures.

The only downfall is composite can get stained or discolored over time. But, otherwise this is a simple and fast option for spacing issues between teeth.

2. Ceramic crowns — In some cases when the gaps are extensive or very large, than giving aesthetic tooth colored ceramic crowns is a great option.
This is a long term and permanent solution wherein the gaps can be completely closed in a highly aesthetic manner.

The only disadvantage of this treatment is the loss of natural tooth structure. Some amount of tooth structure has to be sacrificed for crown preparation.

3. Ceramic Veneers — This is a great option for diastema closures and we at Dr Kandhari’s Skin and Dental Clinic make highly aesthetic Emax ceramic veneers.

This has the advantage of Minimal tooth preparation, thereby saving more of the natural tooth. At the same time, very aesthetic and beautiful results are possible.

4. Dental Implants — When the gaps or spacing is more in such cases implants give a good result.

In such a situation just fillings or crowns may not be able to close the spaces or may appear unnatural. Than placing Implants and giving artificial teeth can give a beautiful result.

At Dr Kandhari’s Skin and Dental clinic we do a computer guided 3D implant placement. This is a much smaller surgery with a faster healing and less discomfort for the patient.

Once the implants have integrated with the natural bone, aesthetic zirconia crowns can be placed to close the gaps.

5. Orthodontic treatment — If the spacing is generalized with multiple gaps between the teeth, complete orthodontic therapy is a good option.

This is a longer procedure but not only gives aesthetic results by closing the gaps, it also corrects the bite and occlusion. This helps to ease the pressure on the TMJ thereby providing relief to the patient.

So if you have gaps or spaces between the teeth, please go ahead and fix your appointment with the dentist.

There are many easy, painless and non invasive options available to fix your smile.
